Viña Aquitania is a boutique winery located at the foot of the Andes Mountains, in the city of Santiago, in the heart of the Maipo Alto Valley. The focus is on the production of high quality wines in limited quantities.
In 1984 Bruno Prats and Paul Pontallier (RIP), well-known Wine Agronomists from the Bordeaux region, France, began to search in Chile for a high-quality Terroir to create an original vineyard.
For this they associate with a common friend, Felipe de Solminihac, Chilean Agronomist Winemaker of French origin. In 1990 they acquired 18 hectares in Peñalolen within the city of Santiago: This place at the foot of the Andes Mountains, is located in the “Quebrada de Macul”, in the historic heart of the Maipo Valley. The first vineyards were planted with Cabernet Sauvignon of Bordeaux origin, present in Chile since the end of the 19th century. The wine cellar finished construction in 1993.
In January 2002, Ghislain de Montgolfier, an Agronomist from the Champagne Region and an old friend of the founders, became the fourth partner, or as he says, recalling the Alexandre Dumas novel, the fourth Musketeer.
Viña Aquitania a place known for its history and quality of wines with the vineyard in the foothills of Cerro San Ramón, this being the first mountain range of the Andes Mountains from West to East. The vineyard is located at an altitude of more than 700 meters and is characterized by a soil of alluvial-colluvial origin, stony and poor, with a thin layer of clayey silt with a low organic matter content. This soil allows a very good infiltration of water which helps the development of roots in depth. The climate of this terroir is influenced by hot days in summer, where temperatures can reach 33ºC, with cold nights between 13º and 15ºC.
This great difference in temperatures is because during the night from the summit of Cerro San Ramón, at 3,253 meters, very cold winds descend towards the vineyard, giving a thermal amplitude of 15 to 20ºC, which greatly helps to preserve the aromas and the freshness of our Cabernet Sauvignon.
This place represents a frost-free climatic zone, with good sun exposure and no rain during the ripening and harvest season of the grapes. There is enough water to irrigate throughout the growth of the vines, which makes this place a magnificent terroir.
